La idea es detener la deforestaci\u00f3n y proteger los \u00e1rboles, que consumen una cantidad masiva de aproximadamente uno a dos mil millones de toneladas de carbono cada a\u00f1o. Un breve resumen de por qu\u00e9 necesitamos \u00e1rboles: las fibras de tejido de los \u00e1rboles requieren carbono para crecer, y su consumo de carbono elimina el carbono de la atm\u00f3sfera. Se estima que, a nivel mundial, los bosques consumen entre 1 y 2 billones de toneladas de carbono cada a\u00f1o, lo cual es una gran parte de los 10 billones de toneladas de carbono producidas por los combustibles f\u00f3siles y otras actividades relacionadas con el hombre.<\/p>\n<p>Entonces, \u00bfest\u00e1 haciendo una diferencia?<\/p>\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos de la Instituci\u00f3n Carnegie para la Ciencia en la Universidad de Stanford, que trabaj\u00f3 en conjunto con WWF, crearon mapas de carbono de alta resoluci\u00f3n para 165,000 kil\u00f3metros cuadrados (64,000 millas cuadradas) de bosques en aproximadamente el 40 por ciento de la Amazon\u00eda colombiana. Este esfuerzo ha permitido a Colombia medir las emisiones derivadas de la deforestaci\u00f3n y la degradaci\u00f3n de los bosques. Puede ver en la imagen a continuaci\u00f3n, las \u00e1reas donde se almacena la mayor cantidad de carbono (en verde) y las \u00e1reas de menor consumo de carbono y mayores emisiones (en rojo). Los resultados indican que la regi\u00f3n es un \u00e1rea importante para el almacenamiento de carbono, manteniendo as\u00ed 1.500 millones de toneladas m\u00e9tricas de carbono fuera de la atm\u00f3sfera. La imagen a continuaci\u00f3n ilustra la enorme diferencia entre las emisiones de carbono en \u00e1reas protegidas y las emisiones de carbono fuera de esas \u00e1reas. Debido al Proyecto de \u00c1rea Protegida dirigido por WWF, es probable que veamos una continuaci\u00f3n de la estabilizaci\u00f3n de millones de acres de bosques en Colombia.
