It’s easy to think of trees as the quiet, steady backdrop to our lives. But in reality, trees and the natural systems they anchor are working overtime to address some of the most difficult challenges facing people and the planet today.
Nature is not a backdrop. Nature is a solution.
One of the most urgent problems we face is food insecurity. In Florida alone, 3.2 million people lack consistent access to nutritious food, a quarter of them children, according to Feeding America’s most recent “Map the Meal Gap” study.
Like so many complex challenges, food insecurity cannot be solved by a single organization, policy, or program. It requires a multifaceted approach that recognizes the connections among social, economic, and environmental factors. Green infrastructure is a crucial and tangible part of that approach, capable of providing nourishment to families who need it most.
That is why, on the first day of the Climate Correction™ conference the Arbor Day Foundation and VoLo Foundation will put the finishing touches on a new food forest in a part of Orlando where fresh, affordable produce is hard to come by. Food forests are a proven urban forestry strategy, blending community need with ecological resilience. They offer more than food. Community tree canopies can cool city streets by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit, act as natural air filters, and improve the physical and mental health of those who live nearby.
This hands-on work reflects the larger conversations we will have at Climate Correction conference. Natural systems inspire our technologies and policies and remind us that the best solutions often come from working with nature, not against it. Every successful food forest and every thriving urban park is proof of this principle in action.
If nature teaches us anything, it is that nothing survives in isolation. Trees grow stronger together, and the same goes for communities. Division keeps us stagnant. Teamwork is the engine of progress, essential and enduring. As the African proverb states, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Everyone has a role to play in shaping a better future, and local leaders are especially critical. With a close understanding of their communities’ unique challenges and strengths, they are well positioned to bring people together.
Unity moves us from idea to action and allows us to accomplish more together than we ever could apart.
Let’s navigate these challenges with trees and with teamwork. Let’s plant seeds of resilience, both in the ground and in our communities. The solutions we need are already here. They are growing quietly and persistently all around us. We just need to reach out, join hands, and help them thrive.
