VoLo Foundation’s support to Lelt in 2018 provided funding to build one of the only renewable-energy technology labs in Eastern Africa, the VoLo Computer Lab. The lab teaches disadvantaged students advanced IT programming skills and uses alternative energy sources, allowing students to continue their work, even when the power grid falters. Additionally, the progress of the technology provided to students has led to the launch of a new program, Girls Who Code, an intensive learning course for 10 of the most advanced technology students.
In 2020, after the first cases of COVID-19 reached Ethiopia, the government shut down all schools and banned public gatherings for at least two weeks. These restrictions prohibited Lelt from running their daily lunch program, so they organized emergency community assistance. VoLo’s grant helped them supply families in this Ethiopian community with a two-week supply of emergency food rations and household necessities.
